Swimming tuition at West Auckland Aquatics is provided through three squads - Gold, Silver and Bronze.
The Bronze Squad is the team's entry level. Swimmers who have graduated from learn to swim programs will fit comfortably into the Bronze Squad. Tuition at this stage will focus on developing skills in all four strokes and in competition skills such as starts and turns. Swimmers in the Bronze Squad are encouraged to take part in the Auckland Swimming Association's Level3 swim meets. These are normally held each month at the West Wave Pool.
The Silver Squad is the next step up from the Bronze Squad. Membership depends on meeting the Auckland Swimming Association's Level2 qualifying standards in any one event. Tuition at this stage is still primarily recreational based but with just enough hard work to give members a taste of what "real" training is all about when they graduate to the Gold Squad.
The Gold Squad offers a full international standard training program. Membership to the Gold Squad depends on meeting the Auckland Swimming Association's Level1 qualifying standards. Although the training offered here is of the highest standards, the amount swum by any member is entirely voluntary. This means the program is equally suitable for the swimmers seeking international honors and the recreational fitness athlete. A full dry land weight training program is offered to the Gold Squad at a small additional weekly charge.
Current training times for the three squads can be seen on the website's HOME page.
The training plan being followed by the Gold Squad through the major portion of this year is shown below. The Silver and Bronze Squads follow a modified version of the same program. The training aims to peak the teams swimmers for the major swimming and surf events in November 2010.
WAQ WINTER TRAINING PROGRAM: The portion of the table shaded in gray shows the weeks completed to date so you can quickly see what has been done and what is still ahead. The codes used in the table mean the following BU - Build Up, AN - Anaerobic, TC - Trials and Coordination, Hol - Holiday. Holiday in this context does not mean a week off but a week of lighter training in preparation for the next period of training.
